He tells himself there will be some kind of platform at the top of the ladder. He gets to forty feet up and it hits him how crazy and dangerous this is. After some banter, bragging and teasing he can't back down, so up he goes. They lark about and one of the boys, trying to impress one of the girls, says he could easily climb up the six-storey-high gasometer, which has a rusty ladder attached to the side.
